In an effort to respect and live peaceably with both nearby property owners and older homeless neighbors, we suspended our curbside services over the summer. Although this type of service had been crucial to our clients during the pandemic, we needed to transition instead to outreaches at other locations.
We visited many spots, but the Central Library seemed to be the best in Austin for our engagement purposes. There are so many people there who are hungry for food and hungry for relationship.
We met more than 172 people there, including 48 clients in our age range. We consider it a privilege to provide food in times of extreme scarcity regardless of age, but we remain true to our mission of engaging mainly with homeless young adults ages 28 and under.
It is a large undertaking, serving at least 60 weekly, and we need assistance from a broader array of Austin civic agencies, church groups and individuals.
Find instructions to donate outreach food bags at vol.SYMin.org or give to our outreach food fund at needs.symin.org.
